Dating as a couple, with care
An Orby guide · November 1, 2026
Dating as a couple can be lovely, and it’s different from dating alone: there are more feelings in the room, and the person you meet is meeting two people at once. These habits make it kinder for everyone.
Before you look
- Agree on what you’re looking for: friends, dates together, separate dates, or seeing what happens.
- Decide who writes to whom, and what you tell each other afterwards.
- Agree that either of you can say no to someone, without a long debate.
A profile that tells the truth
- Show both of you, and say clearly that you’re a couple and what you’re open to.
- Write in your own words, not a list of requirements. People answer warmth.
- If one of you is more eager than the other, wait until you’re both ready.
First messages
- Talk to the person, not about what they could add to your relationship.
- Let them ask anything, and answer as both of you.
- Go at their pace. A quick, kind no is better than a long maybe.
Every person has an equal say
The person you meet isn’t a guest in your relationship. Their feelings, limits and time matter as much as yours. Many in the community call it “unicorn hunting” when a couple looks for one person to fit rules made without them; avoid it by deciding things together, and if your agreements limit what’s possible, say so early.
On the date
- Meet somewhere public first, just to talk.
- Include everyone in the conversation, and leave the couple’s private jokes at home.
- Agree on a quiet signal to pause or head home.
After
Check in with each other, and with them. A kind message the next day, even to say it isn’t a match, is part of dating well as a couple.
