How to open a relationship, step by step

An Orby guide · November 1, 2026

Opening a relationship works best as something you build together, slowly, not a switch you flip. These are the steps couples who do it well tend to take.

1. Start with why

  • Each of you says, separately, what you hope to find and what you’re afraid of losing.
  • Opening a relationship rarely fixes one that’s struggling. If things are hard right now, work on that first.
  • Both of you have to want it for yourselves. A yes given out of fear isn’t a yes.

2. Learn together

Read or listen to the same things and talk about them: the words, the shapes (open, poly, swinging), what fits you. Good first reads: The Ethical Slut, Opening Up, More Than Two.

3. Make agreements, not just rules

  • What’s welcome, what’s a maybe, and what’s off the table for now.
  • How much you want to know: everything, the basics, or nothing beyond safety.
  • Sexual health: testing, protection, and telling each other about changes.
  • Time: how you protect your time together.
  • Agreements about your partner are fine; rules about other people’s feelings rarely work.

4. Start small

A first date, a social event, a conversation with someone else in the community. Go slower than you think you need to. You can always speed up.

5. Check in, often

  • Set a regular time to talk, when nothing urgent is happening.
  • Name what felt good, what was hard, and what you need.
  • Either of you can ask to pause. A pause isn’t a failure.

6. Remember the new people are people

Anyone you date has their own feelings and limits. Be honest with them from the first conversation about your situation and your agreements.
